You’re a creator with one good idea and zero budget. This playbook gets you to a 1,000-subscriber newsletter in 30 days, working evenings only, for less than the price of two streaming services per month.
Total monthly cost: $25. Time investment: 4–6 hrs/week.
Why this stack works
The trick isn’t paying for fancy tools — it’s letting AI handle the parts you’d otherwise procrastinate on (research, first drafts, image creation). You stay in the driver’s seat for voice, audience, and the one or two edits that make the difference between “AI slop” and “this person gets me.”
- Beehiiv handles delivery + signup + monetization (free tier covers 0–2,500 subs)
- ChatGPT ($20/mo) does outline → draft → fact-check loops
- Canva (free tier is enough) for thumbnails + 4:5 social images
- Buffer (free tier) schedules 1 post per platform per issue
- Notion AI ($5/mo extra on existing free workspace) runs your editorial calendar
Cost breakdown
| Tool | Tier | Monthly |
|---|---|---|
| Beehiiv | Launch (free) | $0 |

| Buffer | Free (3 channels) | $0 |
| Notion AI | AI add-on | $5 |
| Total | $25 |
Step 1 — Pick your niche and angle (Day 1, 2 hrs)
In ChatGPT:
“I want to start a weekly newsletter. My background is [X]. List 10 underserved niches where I’d have credibility. For each, give: 3 specific subreddits, 1 angle no big newsletter has, expected CPM if I monetize.”
Pick the niche where you’d happily write 50 issues without getting bored. Boring + recurring beats exciting + one-shot.
Step 2 — Set up Beehiiv (Day 1, 30 min)
Create a publication, custom domain (optional, $12/yr), subscribe form, and a single welcome email. Don’t over-engineer — you’ll iterate after 5 issues.
Step 3 — Build a 12-issue editorial calendar in Notion (Day 2, 1 hr)
Use Notion AI to brainstorm 12 issue ideas based on your angle. One issue per week = three months of runway. Schedule recurring blocks: research Mon, draft Tue, polish Wed, send Thu.
Step 4 — Write Issue #1 (Day 3–5, 3 hrs total)
Workflow:
- Outline in ChatGPT: ask for 5 sub-angles for your topic, pick one.
- Draft: paste 3 source articles + your bullet outline, ask for a 600-word draft in your voice (give it a previous post if you have one).
- Edit ruthlessly. Cut 20%. Add one personal anecdote.
- Generate cover thumbnail in Canva (free templates → 1200x628 PNG).
Step 5 — Promote on 2 channels (Day 6–7, 2 hrs)
ChatGPT prompt: “Turn this newsletter into 1 Twitter thread (8 tweets) and 1 LinkedIn post (250 words). Keep my voice.” Schedule both via Buffer for issue-day morning.
Step 6 — Repeat weekly + measure (Day 8–30)
After issue #4, look at open rates. Below 35% → re-work subject lines (ChatGPT will give 10 variants). Below 10% click? Your CTAs are weak — make exactly one call-to-action per issue.
What you’ll have on Day 30
- 5 issues published
- A working editorial system (~4 hrs/week)
- Mailing list with social proof to convert into paid tiers later
- A library of 5 thumbnails, 5 Twitter threads, 5 LinkedIn posts — all reusable
Common mistakes to avoid
- ❌ Paying for premium Beehiiv before you have 100 subs
- ❌ Letting ChatGPT write the whole thing — readers smell it in 2 sentences
- ❌ Switching niches at issue #3 (commit for at least 12 issues)
- ❌ Manual cross-posting (Buffer does this in seconds)
Ready to upgrade later
Around 1,000 subs you’ll outgrow free Beehiiv. That’s a good problem. Add a paid tier ($5–$10/mo) and the upgrade pays for itself within 50 paid subs.
